Nortel Networks

Background

Nortel Networks is a global Internet and communications leader with offerings spanning Optical Internet, Wireless Internet, Local Internet, eBusiness, and Personal Internet products and services.

  • Nortel Networks' corporate image reflects its mission of redefining the economics and quality of networking and the Internet, promising a new era of collaboration, communications and commerce.
  • Nortel Networks serves the emerging and existing needs of its clients in more than 100 countries and territories around the world.
  • As a leader in several sectors of the new economy, Nortel Networks was already using a distributed model of managing the company's country web sites.

Challenge

Nortel Networks' challenge was to centralize development and maintenance of their country pages while simultaneously strengthening the Nortel Networks brand voice and standardizing the input, production and review process from both North American and International stakeholders. On the technical side, Nortel Networks also had to adapt the centralized system to work within the existing publishing environment and account for future applications and content file types that would be integrated into the company's Internet offerings.

  • Establish consistent brand voice within country sites and across country sites
  • Update content of country sites regularly
  • Resolve international dependencies between groups
  • Integrate web applications into all country sites
  • Manage multiple projects at various stages simultaneously
  • Localize graphics and other technical assets
  • Integrate translated portions of the Nortel Networks site with TeamSite (CMS)
  • Control cost of a 10,000 page localization project and distribute cost appropriately
  • Personalize web content for individuals

Solution

Nortel Networks' circumstance required a highly flexible solution that allowed ongoing translation and localization of content, graphics and other technical assets while the larger strategic process was developed and implemented.

Development of a global strategy for Nortel Networks included:

  • Translations.com assigned a dedicated team of linguists to ensure consistency and development of institutional knowledge from ground zero forward
  • Standard three stage language review, technical review and quality assurance process ensures flawless integration with TeamSite (CMS)
  • Development of a glossary of approved terms and leveraging of repeat text allows for time and cost savings as well as the highest level of consistency
  • Workflow from TeamSite to Translations.com and back to TeamSite is fluid and encapsulated within Nortel Networks' publishing environment, thus making the process easy for each stakeholder who submits a project
  • Localization process is closely tied to base translation process but includes additional steps to account for graphics and other technical assets
  • Creation of content templates that can be used for all countries/languages reinforces the localization process established by Nortel Networks' management and helps minimize "rogue" localization
  • On demand consulting related to Unicode, CMS, Workflow management systems and other applications helps ensure that the localization process is considered a primary component of any web initiative
