History

The story of Translations.com began in 1992 when Phil Shawe and Liz Elting founded a document translation company called TransPerfect Translations. TransPerfect grew steadily to become one of the preeminent document translation firms worldwide.

In 1999, Translations.com was spun off as a separate corporation to focus on the increasing needs for software localization, website localization, and enterprise-wide translation services, which involve an advanced technical skill set and strategic consulting services beyond the core competencies of a document translation firm. Translations.com leveraged the success and experience of its predecessor, and was soon servicing a host of blue chip clients including Abbott Laboratories, American Express, Bacardi, Gucci, J.Crew, Merrill Lynch, Nokia, Nortel, Royal Caribbean and others.

In February 2002, Translations.com acquired Language for Industry (LFI), a localization firm based in Boston with substantial operations in Oregon, as well as sales operations in Denver and London. The acquisition of LFI significantly deepened Translations.com's capacity to handle complex software localization projects and also entered the company into the business of technical writing, and providing linguistic services to the educational publishing industry for clients such as Harcourt and McGraw-Hill.

In July 2002, Translations.com acquired eTranslate, formerly known as Convey Software. With this acquisition, Translations.com gained blue-chip clients including GE, Avis, and Apple as well as a staff of localization engineers with exceptional industry experience. As part of the eTranslate merger, Translations.com entered the GMS (Globalization Management System) technology market by acquiring GlobalLink, the industry's leading GMS product.

The Translations.com story came full circle in early 2005, when the founders announced a 100% stock re-purchase from outside investors. The combination with TransPerfect creates the world's third largest translation and software localization firm. The combined entities have over 1,100 full-time employees and over $200 million in annual revenues.

Today, Translations.com maintains company headquarters in New York, with offices in Atlanta, Barcelona, Boston, Brussels, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Frankfurt, Geneva, Hong Kong, Houston, London, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, Munich, Paris, Philadelphia, Portland, Research Triangle Park, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and West Palm Beach.
