MotionPoint Loses Verdict Over Translation Patents

By Paul Brinkmann

South Florida Business Journal - July 29, 2013

MotionPoint Corp., a Coconut Creek-based tech company, recently lost a verdict to California-based TransPerfect Global over patents on its website translation software.

The jury verdict was $1 million, but the impact of the verdict remains unclear.

In a statement emailed by a spokeswoman, MotionPoint indicated it will appeal and will pursue “all other avenues” to protect its intellectual property.

“While MotionPoint is disappointed in the jury’s verdict, MotionPoint notes that neither side got what they asked for at trial,” the statement said.

The suit was filed in 2010 and had been noted in columns or articles about intellectual property law.

One article predicted that a win by either side in the dispute would unleash more litigation in the field of computer-assisted translation or CAT.

In its second amended complaint, TransPerfect accused MotionPoint of telling customers that TransPerfect’s services infringed on MotionPoint’s patents.

TransPerfect was represented by Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman.
